Match Preview

There’s a big chance for Gold Coast to kick off the post-Garth Brennan era with a bang as they host depleted competition leaders Melbourne on Sunday/

It’s been a terrible season for the Titans and Brennan was promptly given the sack as the club lost 24-2 to the Panthers last week.

With the Bulldogs winning their last two games before a loss against the Broncos to open Round 18 on Thursday night, Gold Coast are anchored to the bottom of the ladder with just four wins from 16 games this season.

The Titans have made a host of changes for this one - Michael Gordon comes back on the bench, Dale Copley and Brenko Lee slot into the backline and Leilani Latu and Sam Stone are the new faces on the bench, with Anthony Don, Mitch Rein and Will Matthews dropped and Shannon Boyd out due to an arm injury.

Meanwhile, Craig Bellamy has decided this is the perfect opportunity to rest his Origin stars after the Storm opened up a six-point lead at the top of the ladder following last week’s 40-16 victory over Cronulla.

The win doubled as a celebration for Cameron Smith’s 400th NRL game, and with plenty of emotion poured into it, there is a chance the Storm could have a letdown heading up to face the last-placed team on Sunday.

Cameron Munster, Josh Addo-Carr, Will Chambers, Felise Kaufusi and Christian Welch are all out, but Smith will play.

Gold Coast have actually given good accounts of themselves against Melbourne in recent meetings, including winning 38-36 in a thrilling encounter two years ago, while their last clash in 2018 resulted in a 10-8 loss at AAMI Park. With the odds on offer, a Titans upset is a solid gamble.
