Match Preview

It’s early in the season, but you get the feeling Sunday’s showdown on the Gold Coast is a must-win game for both the Knights and Titans if they harbour ambitions of chasing a finals spot

Newcastle were tipped by man to make the eight this year and looked the goods in their opening round win over Cronulla, but they’ve since lost four games on the bounce - with all four games going right down to the wire as well.

It’s both a positive and a negative for the Knights - on one hand, they know they’re not too far away from stringing together some winning momentum, but on the other, it’s got to be soul-crushing to get so close but come away with nothing for a month, and that could potentially leave a lasting negative affect on the side.

Only one change for the Knights for this clash, with Herman Ese’ese coming onto the bench in place of the injured Aidan Guerra.

While the Titans have also won just once this season, they are in a much better headspace after claiming their opening victory last week against a more-fancied Panthers outfit.

Gold Coast twice came from behind to register the upset and get off the mark for 2019, but these are the sorts of games at home they need to win if they want to conjure up an unlikely challenge for the eight.

Shannon Boyd returns from injury in place of the suspended Jarrod Wallace, while Phillip Sami comes onto the bench for AJ Brimson, who is out with a broken thumb.

High-scoring games are the norm between these two teams, with at least one team scoring at least 26 points in their last seven encounters, while the Knights and Titans have split their last four meetings at two wins apiece. I’ve stuck with the Knights for the last month to no avail, so it’s time to back the plucky Titans to get up at home and make it back-to-back wins.

Match Odds

Gold Coast Titans - $1.86
