Match Preview

It’s been a turbulent week at the foot of the mountains - can Penrith overcome the shock mid-week sacking of coach Anthony Griffin and continue their push towards the top four against the lowly Titans on Saturday?

Unbelievably, the Panthers have opted to give Griffin the punt despite the coach guiding his side into the finals every season since taking charge, while they are currently sitting pretty in fifth spot on the ladder coming into Round 22 - and just two points off second.

Obviously the big rumour is that Penrith want to lure Ivan Cleary back to the club so they can hold onto star halfback Nathan, but he’s still contracted to the Tigers for two more seasons and they don’t want to let him go.

Nevertheless, rookie coach Cameron Ciraldo has taken over as temporary coach as the Panthers attempt to put all the controversy behind them and focus on the task at hand - beating the Titans on Sunday.

Gold Coast have been their usual unpredictable selves throughout the season, but once again there’s been more bad than good and they find themselves in 12th spot on the table as a result.

Defence has always been a big issue for the Titans and that’s continued all season long - they’ve conceded 28 or more points in three of their last five.

Penrith meanwhile have also struggled in that area - they’ve leaked 24 or more points in their last four games, although they’ve staged extraordinary comebacks in their last two victories against Manly and Canberra.

The Panthers have a tremendous record against Gold Coast and beat them easily earlier in the season. If they can put the Griffin drama behind them, they should be too classy for the Titans on Saturday.
