Prediction

Match Preview

It’s 12th vs 13th on the ladder as the struggling Knights and Cowboys aim for a much-needed victory on Saturday afternoon in the Hunter.

Newcastle are still mathematically a chance of making the finals, but they realistically need to win all of their remaining games and hope other results go their way.

However, when you consider the Knights are on a six-match losing streak, it’s hard to see them turning their fortunes around so drastically.

It seems like light years ago when the Knights launched themselves into the top four on the back of some Mitchell Pearce, Kalyn Ponga and David Klemmer brilliance, but it seems the Origin period shook them up and they haven’t recovered since.

Newcastle are coming off a 20-14 loss to the Eels, with Josh King and Herman Ese’ese coming into the side for Tim Glasby and Danny Levi. Connor Watson will start at hooker.

Meanwhile, the Cowboys are on a four-match losing run and are out of the finals barring the biggest miracle of all time.

North Queensland could have kept their slim chances alive for one more week, but they succumbed in the final minute to Brisbane, losing 18-14.

The Cowboys are now equal second-last on the ladder with the Bulldogs and Dragons in what has been another season to forget. Jordan McLean is back from injury and replaces the suspended Josh McGuire.

North Queensland have won the last four meetings between the teams, but this one is anyone’s guess. Both sides are playing poorly and are down on confidence. I’ll tentatively side with the Knights because they still have an outside chance of finals - and surely they have to break their six-game losing run sooner rather than later…

Match Odds

Newcastle Knights - $1.50
North Queensland Cowboys - $2.60
