Match Preview

After registering arguably the upset of the season last week over the Roosters, can North Queensland repeat that effort and take out the second-placed Rabbitohs in Townsville on Saturday night?

The Cowboys put a last-start loss to the Dragons well and truly behind them as they ran out 15-12 winners over the reigning premiers, advancing up to 10th spot on the ladder as a result.

After never really being in the finals hunt all season, the Cowboys are two points adrift of eighth spot, and if they can produce another upset in front of their home fans on Saturday night, they could end the weekend in the eight if other results go their way.

Paul Green has made just the one change from the victorious team of last week, with Jordan Kahu out injured with a fractured eye socket, replaced by debutant Murray Taulagi.

South Sydney finally returned to the winners circle last week, posting their first victory since May 25 as they edged Manly 21-20 courtesy of an Adam Reynolds field goal in the 74th minute.

The Rabbitohs were looking good for the minor premiership before going on a four-match losing streak and seeing Melbourne overtake them for a current six-point lead at the top of the ladder.

Souths weren’t entirely convincing last week, but the main thing is they got a win on the board, which should provide some confidence going forward. Ethan Lowe also returns after being rested last week.

On a three-match winning run against the Cowboys, I think Souths should be able to carve out another victory here. It’s a big ask for North Queensland to put together back-to-back top four scalps, while surely the Rabbitohs are on their way back after a tough period.
