Canberra Raiders face South Sydney Rabbitohs and Sydney Roosters take on Melbourne Storm in two blockbuster NRL preliminary finals this weekend.

The 2019 NRL grand finalists will be decided this weekend as Sydney Roosters and Melbourne Storm collide in a rematch of last year’s showpiece, while Canberra Raiders and South Sydney Rabbitohs will square off for the other spot.

Canberra have put together a superb season on the back of some much-improved defence, and after earning their second away win over Melbourne this year in the first week of the finals, they are now one victory away from a first Grand Final since 1994.

Standing in their way is the Rabbitohs, who are trying to return to the Grand Final for the first time since their drought-breaking 2014 triumph. Souths haven’t been at their best since the Origin period, but they are toiling away and managed to come from behind to topple Manly 34-26 in last week’s qualifying final. Can Wayne Bennett plot another Grand Final appearance for the Bunnies, or will Canberra’s sizzling season hit fresh heights?

Canberra and Souths collide on Friday night at GIO Stadium in the nation’s capital, with that match to be followed by the Storm and Roosters on Saturday night at the SCG.

Melbourne bounced back superbly from their shock loss to Canberra in Week 1 of the finals, crushing Parramatta by a 32-0 scoreline on Saturday night, emphatically making a statement of intent and proving they are far from a spent force.

But they will have their work cut out against the team that beat them in last year’s Grand Final, with the Roosters easing into the preliminary finals and benefitting from a week off after demolishing Souths 30-6.

The Roosters appear to be timing their run perfectly once more and will be confident of going one step further to becoming the first team to defend the NRL premiership since Brisbane in 1992/93.
