Storm and Broncos clash on Thursday

Footy is back! The 2019 NRL season gets underway on Thursday night when old rivals Melbourne Storm and Brisbane Broncos collide, before reigning premiers Sydney Roosters square off against bitter foes South Sydney.

Melbourne and Brisbane officially launch the 2019 NRL season on Thursday night at AAMI Park, with both premiership contenders determined to get off to a winning start. Melbourne will be playing their first season without Billy Slater since 2003, while the Broncos begin life once again without Wayne Bennett at the helm.

The first game on Friday night pits the Newcastle Knights up against Cronulla Sharks at McDonald Jones Stadium. Newcastle are aiming high this season and are targeting a top eight finish, while the Sharks will be keen to put some off-field issues to the side and get the focus back on their football.

Defending premiers Sydney Roosters then take on traditional rivals South Sydney Rabbitohs at the SCG in the second game on Friday night. Somehow, the Roosters have strengthened for this season after surging to the premiership last campaign, but the Rabbitohs will be out to take them down a peg in the first game of the year.

Super Saturday starts across the ditch as New Zealand Warriors play host to Canterbury Bulldogs at Mt Smart Stadium. The Warriors scraped into the eight last season but have lost star halfback Steve Johnson, while the Bulldogs are wooden spoon favourites and will be looking to prove the punters wrong in the opening hit-out of the season.

Both Wests Tigers and Manly Sea Eagles failed to make the finals last season - who gets off to a winning start when the two teams clash at Leichhardt Oval in the second game on Saturday night? And in their first game without Johnathan Thurston for 2019, the North Queensland Cowboys round out Super Saturday against the St. George Illawarra Dragons.

After a nightmare off-season, Penrith Panthers begin their season with an old-school grudge match against Western Sydney rivals Parramatta Eels at Panthers stadium, while the Gold Coast Titans and Canberra Raiders conclude the opening round at Cbus Super Stadium later on Sunday night.
