Sydney Roosters and Canberra Raiders collide in the NRL Grand Final on Sunday night and we’ve picked out our three best bets for the big showdown!

Roosters to win 13+

Trent Robinson’s side have been the stand-out team in the competition all season, despite Melbourne losing just three games and winning the minor premiership, and I think they can cap a superb year by registering a comprehensive victory over the Raiders on Sunday.

Timing is everything in the NRL, and the Roosters have done it to perfection in 2019, peaking with a month or so to go in the regular season and maintaining that level throughout finals wins over the Storm and Rabbitohs.

NRL Grand Final first tryscorer tips

The Roosters have all the big-game experience having triumphed in last year’s Grand Final, while the Raiders are stepping into the unknown for their first premiership decider since 1994. Canberra have a horrible record against the Roosters in Sydney, winning just one of their last 17 games, and lost both of their meetings this season.

I can see this one being tight early on, but the Roosters will gradually get on top, and once they open up a decent lead, the floodgates could well and truly open.

Total Points - Over 33.5

I think we’ll see quite a few points scored in this one, despite both teams being equipped with some of the best defence in the competition. Grand Finals are a different beast and I’m not sure if the Raiders will be able to hang with the Roosters at this intensity, especially if they trail early.

I worry about Canberra’s game management in the halves. Aidan Sezer is a great player, no doubt, but is he a premiership-winning halfback? And can he steer his side to victory against one of the best teams we’ve seen this century?

For the Raiders to have any chance, there defence has to be out of this world, but I don’t see it happening. I expect the Roosters to win big and rack up the points in doing so.

Half-time/Full-time double - Roosters/Roosters

Considering I’m backing the Roosters home in a one-sided victory, they will almost certainly be winning this clash at half-time. The return of Jared Waerea-Hargreaves is a huge boost for the Bondi club, who win over 73 per cent of matches when he’s on the field. He’ll add plenty of aggression to the forward pack, who will be out to assert their dominance over Canberra’s big men early in the contest.

Expect the Roosters to carve out a solid lead at half-time before running away with the Grand Final in the second stanza.
