It’s a 2018 Grand Final rematch for the right to advance into the 2019 showpiece as Sydney Roosters and Melbourne Storm collide in a blockbuster preliminary final showdown on Saturday night.

Roosters vs Storm kicks off at 7.50pm AEST at the SCG. The game will be broadcast live on Fox Sports and Channel 9 in Australia.

Prediction

Match Preview

It doesn’t get much bigger than this as two of the NRL’s heavyweight clubs clash one week earlier than anticipated, with only one of the Roosters and Storm to get the chance to play for the 2019 premiership.

No team has gone back-to-back in NRL Grand Finals since the legendary Broncos team of 1992/93, but this Roosters team has got to be considered the best chance to snap that drought.

Trent Robinson’s side have timed their run perfectly once again, laying the foundation early in the season, surviving the always-tough Origin period and putting together a big winning run at the end of the regular season to build confidence and the intimidation factor for the finals.

The Roosters took a brief hit when Souths beat them in a brutal game in the last round of the regular season, but they bounced back when it mattered more and thrashed their arch-rivals 30-6 in the first week of the finals to earn a week off.

Jared Waerea-Hargreaves misses out this week due to suspension, with Siosiua Taukeiaho promoted to the starting side and Lindsay Collins coming onto the bench.

Meanwhile, Melbourne haven’t been all that impressive during the back-end of the season, losing twice to Canberra at home, including in week one of the finals, and generally failing to hit top form over the last couple of months.

There’s reason to believe the Storm have already hit their peak this season, but they reminded everyone what they’re capable of last week as they crushed Parramatta 32-0.

Craig Bellamy has named the same 17 players for this clash, with Curtis Scott retaining his place in the centres, forcing Will Chambers to come off the bench.

It’s going to take a massive effort from Melbourne to beat the Roosters at the SCG, and I’m not sure they have it in them right now. The Roosters have been in much better form over the last couple of months, are fresh after the week off and will feel if they can win this, another premiership is there for the taking. I don’t like writing off Melbourne, but a big Roosters win here is good value.
