Match Preview

After three defeats on the bounce, Canberra managed to return to the winners circle last week as they overcame a gallant Bulldogs outfit - can they make it back-to-back victories and perhaps slide back into the top four when they do battle with the Tigers on Friday night?

On the back of some brilliant defence, the Raiders were one of the best teams in competition over the first couple of months, however a couple of close defeats to heavyweights Souths and the Roosters, coupled with a surprise loss to North Queensland, have seen the Green Machine drop down to fifth on the ladder.

It could have been worse when a depleted Raiders side took on the bottom-placed Bulldogs last week, but Ricky Stuart’s side got back to their best in defence and held on for a 12-10 victory.

Jack Wighton, Josh Papalii and Nick Cotric have been named to back up from Origin, while Jordan Rapana returns from injury and John Bateman continues his own comeback after last week.

The Tigers meanwhile have tumbled down to 10th spot on the ladder with a 5-7 record, with their last win coming almost a month ago when they beat the Panthers during Magic Round.

It’s been an inconsistent season for Michael Maguire’s side - at times the Tigers look dangerous, and they did push Melbourne and Souths in their last two defeats, but at others, they struggle to score points and don’t look like a top eight side.

Moses Mbye will line up for the side provided he makes it through his Origin debut unscathed, pushing Corey Thompson to the wing and David Nofoaluma out of the team.

Canberra have posted some enormous winning margins over the Tigers in recent times (54 points in R8, 2016, 42 points in R26 2016, 40 points in R3 2017 and 36 points in R15 2018), but the Tigers did win their last clash in R22 last season 22-20. However, the Raiders have a lot of key players back in their team for this one, and have been playing some much better football in 2019. I’d be surprised if they lost this one.
