The Six Nations heavyweights should make for the most competitive of the Rugby World Cup quarter-finals when Wales and France meet at Oita Stadium on Sunday.

We preview the game and predict just where it might be won and lost.

Match Preview

Wales have been in sublime form, winning all of their pool games which followed an undefeated Six Nations campaign. They also took the top rank on the IRB world rankings for the first time ever.

The Welsh have won seven of their previous eight games against the French, though their Six Nations encounter earlier this year was a narrow 24-19 win after Warren Gatland's side scored a go ahead try in the 72nd minute.

While the road has been paved with gold for Wales en route to this encounter, the same cannot be said for the French. They started their campaign with a 23-21 win over Argentina, a game where they led 20-3 at the half only to fall behind in the second stanza before a 69th minute drop goal eked them through.

A routine win over the USA followed before they struggled to get past Tonga, sneaking away with a 23-21 win again. They did, however, potentially dodge a bullet with their last game of pool play against England being cancelled.

Throw into this, once again, the French side seem to be falling apart at the seams with coach mutinies, internal conflict and player uprisings that are becoming almost traditional for French World Cup campaigns.

But as we saw in New Zealand in 2011, a campaign they reached the final in, they seem to thrive off it. Could this be the same again?

Match Odds

Wales $1.32
France $3.30

Tips

Perhaps no team in World Rugby is harder to predict than France. They are the classic "on their day" side, and they've come across those days at World Cups quite consistently. The flare and attitude the bring to the game always gives them a punches chance.

I don't expect them to pull it off here, but I do see them keeping it close, and taking France plus the points provides that additional buffer in case they do have one of those days.
