Match Preview

It is no surprise to see Bayern Munich and Real Madrid in the final four of this season’s Champions League, but of course only one of them can book a place in the final in Kiev next month so what awaits us are two highly-intriguing ties between two of European football’s biggest clubs.

Bayern Munich made hard work of their quarter-final tie as they battled past Manchester United’s conquerors, Sevilla, to book a place in the semi-finals. Munich suffered a scare early on in the first leg as they went 1-0 down, but Jesus Navas levelled things up five minutes later and Thiago Alcantara then completed the comeback to give the German champions a 2-1 lead to take into the second leg on home turf. Bayern were unable to put the tie to bed emphatic fashion at the Allianz Arena, but a 0-0 draw was enough to send them through and they now have their sights on the final.

But so do Real Madrid, who survived a gigantic scare as they scraped into the semi-finals. Two goals from Cristiano Ronaldo and a Marcelo strike had them firmly on course of the final four as they romped to a 3-0 victory when they visited Juventus for the first leg of their last-eight tie, but the Italian giants were not about to go quietly and they stunned the Bernabeu as they scored three goals in the first 60 minutes to go level on aggregate. Real were not going to be denied though and Ronaldo snatched the decisive goal seven minutes into time added on to see Madrid though.
So will Real Madrid record another away win to take control of this Champions League tie or can Bayern Munich put themselves within touching distance of a first final appearances since 2013?

I am going with Bayern for Wednesday night. Real Madrid, of course, are too good to simply overlook, but Munich’s home form at the Allianz Arena has been borderline this season. In the Bundesliga they are unbeaten at home while dropping points on just two occasions, and in the Champions League they have won four and drawn one while out-scoring the opposition 14-1. Therefore you have to believe they have what it takes to at least run out winners in Wednesday night’s first leg – whether they win the tie itself is open to debate.

For my second selection, I suggest putting your money on Robert Lewandowski to play a goal-scoring role for Bayern. The Polish forward is on the brink of taking his goal haul to 40 in all competitions this season and that is no surprise given his recent form in front of goal. In the Champions League he has now netted five times – scoring in three of Bayern’s five home outings – and I would not be shocked to see Lewandowski bag another goal at the Allianz Arena.

Stats

  • Bayern Munich have not lost a competitive game at home this season
  • Bayern Munich have won four and drawn one of their home matches in the Champions League, out-scoring the opposition 14-1
  • Real Madrid have won four of their last five Champions League meetings with Bayern Munich
  • Bayern Munich have won six of their 14 games against Real Madrid in the Champions League era, losing seven and drawing one
  • Robert Lewandowski has scored in three of Bayern Munich’s five home games in the Champions League
  • Robert Lewandowski has netted almost 40 goals in all competitions for Bayern Munich so far this season
