UEFA Champions League Tips - Best bets for Wednesday night’s Matchday 5 matches

Lionel Messi of Barcelona

Will Roma wrap up a last-16 spot against a desperate Atletico Madrid and can Barcelona exorcise some demons when they pay a visit to Italy to take on Juventus? Read on for all of our free predictions and betting tips for Wednesday.

CSKA Moscow v Benfica

A point will be enough for CSKA Moscow to ensure they get a crack at the Europa League this season, but the Russian side have bigger fish to fry because victory would give them a serious chance of qualifying for the knockout stage of the Champions League alongside Manchester United. Third-place Moscow are behind Basel on goal difference only, but with the Swiss side expected to lose to United on Wednesday night, the Russian side know that a win over Benfica could give them the upper-hand heading into Matchday Six. I believe they will get one. The rock-bottom visitors have lost all four of their games so far and having seen Moscow win in Portugal, I see no reason why they cannot do the double by winning on home soil.

Anderlecht v Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich go into this match in fantastic form having won each of their last eight competitive games, and there is very little chance of Anderlecht stopping them in their tracks on Wednesday night. The Belgian side, who were soundly beaten when they visited the Allianz Arena in September, have lost all four of their group games so far and are yet to score a single goal, having conceded 15 of them. Celtic and Paris St Germain have run riot at the Stade Constant Vanden Stock and Bayern should follow in their footsteps here.

Atletico Madrid v Roma

Atletico Madrid find themselves in a ‘win or bust’ situation after four rounds of fixtures in Group C. Three draws and a home defeat to Chelsea have left them four points behind the second-place Blues going into their latest fixture and that means they simply have to collect three points on Matchday Five. However, I do not see that happening. Roma are yet to taste defeat in this group and they have now won each of their last six games in all competitions, while losing only one of their last 15, so I expect them to come away from Madrid with at least a point.

Juventus v Barcelona

A goalless draw in Greece was hardly a great result for Barcelona, but it all but secured their place in the knockout stage of the Champions League and they will now look to wrap up top spot in Group D by beating Juventus for the second time in the group stage. Barca suffered a humiliating 3-0 defeat when they visited the Juventus Stadium in this competition last season, but the home side appear to be on the slide after several years of dominance in Italian football and go into this match having won only one of their last three competitive games. Barcelona, meanwhile, have won each of their last seven fixtures and are unbeaten in their last 17, winning 15 of them, so I am backing Lionel Messi & Co. to exorcise last season’s demons with a victory.

Sporting Lisbon v Olympiakos

Sporting Lisbon are not out of the running for a last-16 spot just yet, but they desperately need to win their penultimate group game in order to stay in the mix. A win here would at least guarantee them a place in the Europa League and I am backing the Portuguese side to walk away with all three points. Olympiakos did hold Barcelona to a surprise draw when they hosted the La Liga giants last time out, but they have been beaten by a couple of goals in each of their previous two away games in this competition and I expect that to become a hat-trick of away-day defeats here.
