Alexis Sanchez in action against Australia

Australia's Socceroos will bid to stop Alexis Sanchez and his Chile side when they conclude their Confederations Cup Group B campaign in Moscow on Sunday.

Match Preview

Chile have become one of the teams to watch on the international stage in recent years. Having impressed fans across the globe with their no fear approach during the 2014 World Cup, they've since gone on to win two Copa America trophies are eyeing more silverware in the Confederations Cup.

After a comfortable 2-0 win over Cameroon in their opening match, La Roja then held the world champions Germany to a draw after Alexis Sanchez got an early goal for the South Americans. They're expected to ease to another three points and into the semi-finals here...but can the Socceroos cause an upset and qualify themselves?

Prior to the friendly match against Brazil in the week before this tournament, Australia had gone eight games unbeaten. Their chances of qualifying for next summer's World Cup look good and that may ease the pain of what looks like a disappointing Confederations Cup campaign.

After missing out in a narrow 3-2 defeat at the hands of world champions Germany in their opening game and, after then being held to a draw against Cameroon, the Socceroos are in desperate need of three points from this game to keep any chance of surviving in the tournament alive.

Chile are undoubtedly the stronger of these two sides and they possess plenty of quality attacking players. Australia's defence is relatively inexperienced and as such, they might struggle to cope with the quality of players like Sanchez and Eduardo Vargas.

Sanchez's goal against Germany on Thursday night confirmed him as Chile's all-time leading goalscorer. The Arsenal forward is unstoppable when he's in full flow and after he bagged 30 goals in all competitions for the Gunners this season, his confidence will be high. He should be good for another goal in this one.

Stats

  • Chile have won one and drawn one of their first two games of the tournament so far
  • Australia, meanwhile, have drawn one and lost one of their two opening matches
  • La Roja have won four and drawn one of their previous five games against the Socceroos
