  • English Premier League Week 2 Tips, Predictions and Preview

Week 1 was a terrific opening week of football, with Liverpool scoring a 4-0 victory against West Ham and looking like the early danger to Man City, who cruised through their 2-0 victory against Arsenal.

Week 2 sees some interesting matches, with Liverpool v Crystal Palace and Chelsea v Arsenal both looking like good matchups.

Cardiff City v Newcastle

Cardiff’s attempt to stay in the top flight for the first time since 1961 has not started well, with a poor 2-0 loss to Bournemouth in week 1. Cardiff had only 37 percent possession and recorded only one shot on target for the entire game. Josh Murphy did provide some hope for Cardiff, providing pace off the bench in the second half. Murphy will be pushing for a starting spot against Newcastle. Newcastle started their Premier League with a 2-1 loss to Tottenham. An 11th-minute strike from Joselu evened the score at 1-1, but two goals inside 18 minutes saw Tottenham take a 2-1 victory. Cardiff can keep things close but I believe Newcastle can come away with a 1-0 victory.

West Ham v Bournemouth

Bournemouth got their Premier League season off to the best possible start with a 2-0 victory against Cardiff. West Ham was outmatched in their opener, going down 4-0 to the impressive Liverpool. West Ham and Bournemouth have faced off six times and it couldn’t be more even between the two teams. Both teams have won twice, with two draws included in the six matches. The most recent matchup was a 1-1 draw at London Stadium back in January. I don’t think there is too much between these two teams and for the reason, I’m happy to back the draw.

Everton v Southampton

Everton will be sweating on the fitness of Richarlison after he limped off in the second half against the Wolves. Richarlison scored twice in the 2-2 draw against Wolves before suffering from cramp late in the match. Southampton struggled through a 0-0 draw against Burnley in their week 1 match. They never looked likely in an underwhelming start to their Premier League. Everton return home and should get the three points over Southampton.

Leicester v Wolves

I’m happy to be with Leicester after their week 1 showing against Manchester United. Leicester were always on the back foot as Paul Pogba gave Man U the best possible start, netting a penalty kick in the 3rd minute. Leicester kept fighting, having 13 shots to 8 and eventually getting reward in the 92nd minute, with a goal to finish with a 2-1 loss. The Wolves were down twice in their match against Everton, but rallied both times as Raul Jimenez scored the equalizer in the 80th minute. The Wolves split the points against Everton but must raise their level to do the same against Leicester.

Tottenham v Fulham

Tottenham will be confident that they can make it two wins in the first two weeks when they face the shaky Fulham at Wembley Stadium. The Spurs kicked two goals in the first 18 minutes of their Premier League season and that set up a 2-1 victory against Newcastle at St James’s Park. The newly promoted Fulham didn’t start their campaign off well, with a 0-2 loss to Crystal Palace, allowing Palace 10 shots on target in 90 minutes. The Spurs should be winning and winning comfortably

Chelsea v Arsenal

The feature match of week 2 is Chelsea against Arsenal at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea only needed 4 shots on target to record an easy 3-0 victory over Huddersfield in week 1, with goals to N’Golo Kante, Jorginho and Pedro. Arsenal performed quite well in their week 1 match against Manchester City considering the circumstances. Man City had eight shots on target to three and held 58 percent of possession. A trip to Stamford Bridge is likely enough to see Arsenal start the Premier League 0-2, as I’m siding with Chelsea in this matchup.

Burnley v Watford

Watford dominated proceedings in their opening week encounter against Brighton, winning 2-0, with Roberto Pereyra striking twice within 20 minutes. Watford dominated from the outset, with 19 shots to 6 and five shots on target to zero. Burnley squeaked out a tough 0-0 draw against the disappointing Southampton away from home and return to Turf Moor against Watford. I’m predicting a close match and a possible 1-1 draw.

Manchester City v Huddersfield

There really isn’t much to analyse in this match. David Silva and Fabian Delph joined the Man City squad at training on Monday after the side romped to a 2-0 victory against Arsenal on Sunday. Huddersfield was completely outclassed against Chelsea, recording only one shot on target in their 0-3 defeat in week 1. The only question is, how much will Man City win by?

Brighton v Manchester United

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho will welcome back Romelu Lukaku back to the starting 11 when they face Brighton. Man United made the most of their eight shots on goal, with six on target, they scored a 2-1 victory against Leicester who had 54 percent of possession and 13 shots on goal. They face Brighton who never looked likely in a lackluster 0-2 defeat against Watford. They didn’t have a single shot on target and will be looking to bounce back at Amex Stadium.

Crystal Palace v Liverpool

Liverpool dominated West Ham in their week 1 match, showing the competition they are clearly the second-best team in the Premier League. Crystal Palace had a nice win of their own, defeating Fulham 2-0. Despite Fulham having 67 percent of possession, Crystal Palace had 10 shots on target and dominated from the outset. This will be a good test to see where both teams are at early in the season. Crystal Palace is being underrated by many in my opinion, however, If Liverpool is going to be a serious challenger to Man City, they must show that and beat Crystal Palace convincingly.
