Newcastle Jets attempt to qualify for the 2019 AFC Champions League group stage when they take on reigning Asian champions Kashima Antlers in Japan on Tuesday night.

Kashima vs Newcastle kicks off at 9.00pm AEST at Kashima Soccer Stadium. The game will be broadcast live on Fox Sports in Australia.

Match Preview

Newcastle are one win away from their first AFC Champions League group stage campaign in over a decade, but they have the toughest possible test in front of them, going toe-to-toe with reigning champions Kashima Antlers on Tuesday night in Japan.

The Jets earned their shot at Kashima courtesy of a 3-1 extra-time victory last week over plucky Indonesian champions Persija Jakarta and continued their winning form just a few days later on Friday night when they conquered Melbourne City 3-1 with an understrength team at McDonald Jones Stadium.

Ernie Merrick decided to rest the likes of Dimi Petratos, Glenn Moss, Ronny Vargas and Daniel Georgevski, but a number of first-team players still took to the field, including Roy O’Donovan, who scored the Jets’ third goal to seal all three points.

Kashima meanwhile are in the middle of their off-season after finishing third in the J-League last season, with Urawa Red Diamonds’ win in the Emperor Cup meaning they are forced to win this qualifying tie in order to give themselves a chance of defending their Asian Champions League title.

Their last competitive games came at the FIFA Club World Cup, where they faced the likes of European champions Real Madrid and South American powerhouses River Plate, losing 3-1 and 4-0 respectively.

Kashima’s main man is striker Yuma Suzuki, who was named the AFC Champions League player of the tournament in 2018 and has scored 27 goals for the club.

There’s no denying this is an extremely tough test for the Jets, especially with the travel involved and playing three games in the last seven days. They have nothing to lose as all the pressure will be on the defending champions, but Kashima at home will likely prove a step too far for Newcastle.
