Liverpool and Roma are shock semi-finalists in the Champions League – but who will take a big step towards the final when they meet in the first leg at Anfield?

Prediction

Match Preview

Only the most ardent of Liverpool and Roma fans would have expected their team to be in the semi-finals of the Champions League after they were drawn against two of the favourites in the last eight, but here they are only 180 minutes away from an appearance in this season’s final. The question is, who will have a shot at becoming European champions in Kiev next month?

Liverpool booked their place in the final four with a sensational 5-1 aggregate win over Manchester City. The Reds had become the first English club to beat City this season when they won a seven-goal thriller with the Premier League champions in January, but the best was yet to come as a sensational first-half blitz at Anfield handed them a 3-0 lead to take to the Etihad Stadium for the second leg. Jurgen Klopp’s men then completed the job in fine style as they won the return meeting too, by a 2-1 scoreline, and that has made them a real dark horse to go all the way this season.

Roma, of course, have ambitions of their own and it has to be said that their quarter-final success was even more stunning than Liverpool’s. The Italian club appeared to be dead and buried after a 4-1 first-leg defeat in Barcelona, but Edin Dzeko’s strike 10 minutes from time at the Camp Nou turned out to be more than just consolation when the two teams resumed their tie in the Italian capital. Kostas Manolas’ 82nd minute goal wrapped up a 3-0 victory for Roma on the night, and with the aggregate score tied at 4-4 that mean Roma went through courtesy of the away goals rule.

It was remarkable stuff from both sides but only one of them can now go on to the final – so who will draw first blood when the two teams kick-off their two-legged semi-final tie at Anfield on Tuesday night?

Roma have proved to be one of the best travellers in Italian football this season, having rarely lost on their travels on the domestic scene, but in the Champions League their form away from home has left a lot to be desired. They have lost each of their last three away matches in this season’s competition – 2-0 at Atletico Madrid, 2-1 at Shakhtar Donetsk and 4-1 at Barcelona – and if you look back even further they have now won only one of their last 15 Champions League fixtures away from the Stadio Olimpico.

That statistic is simply too much to ignore because Liverpool have been very strong at Anfield this season. The Reds are the only club yet to lose a home match in the Premier League and on the European front they have not lost in front of The Kop this season. There have been a few disappointing draws here and there, but there is real belief that we are now beginning to see Jurgen Klopp’s masterplan unfold and therefore I am confident in backing them to run out winners in the first leg on Tuesday night. I expect to see goals too – they always tend to flow when Liverpool are in action.

And speaking of goals, my second recommendation is to back Sadio Mane to score anytime for Liverpool. It seems mad to overlook Mohamed Salah, who has been in blistering form during his first season on Merseyside, but while the Egyptian has been grabbing the headlines team-mate Mane has been chipping in with plenty of goals too – especially in this competition. The Senegalese forward has scored seven goals in this competition already this season and the price on him taking that tally to eight against Roma offers plenty of appeal.

Stats

  • Liverpool have lost only one competitive home match this season and are yet to lose at Anfield in the Premier League and the Champions League
  • Roma have won just once on their travels in the Champions League so far this season
  • Roma have won only one of their last 15 away matches in the Champions League
  • Over 2.5 Total Goals has been a winning bet on 10 of Liverpool’s 12 European fixtures this season
  • Five of Liverpool’s six home games in this season’s Champions League have produced at least three goals
  • Sadio Mane has scored seven goals in his last six Champions League appearances for Liverpool
