Match Preview

Adelaide could further break away from City and cement their top four status if they can emerge triumphant with the three points on Saturday night.

After capturing the FFA Cup trophy with a win over Sydney FC to begin the season, I think it’s fair to say that Adelaide haven’t been overly impressive, but they’ve been solid without being spectacular - and that’s been enough to almost seal finals football with 10 rounds to play.

But the Reds want more, and after last week’s astonishing comeback win over Brisbane, they now have their sights set on a top four finish.

It appeared as if Adelaide could be dragged back into a battle for fifth and sixth after falling behind 3-0 to Brisbane last week, but the Reds somehow staged a miraculous comeback, becoming just the second team in A-League history to overturn a 3-0 deficit and win the game, scoring on the stroke of half-time before three second half goals propelled them to a famous victory.

With City losing to Sydney, that result meant Adelaide leapfrogged their rivals into fourth position on the ladder.

City have now lost back-to-back games against Wellington and Sydney without scoring a goal, with the last time they went three games drawing a blank coming over four years ago.

However, Jamie Maclaren is set to make his debut for City and should be able to help the club break their goal-scoring drought, with the former Socceroo eager to recapture his best form after a poor season at Hibs and some lacklustre displays for Australia in the Asian Cup.

City are undefeated in their last five A-League games against Adelaide and have kept four clean sheets in that period - and I think they can return to the winners circle on Saturday night. I’m still not convinced with Adelaide, and if not for Brisbane’s two red cards last week, they probably would have lost to one of the competition’s battlers at home. Expect City to bounce back with all three points.
