Melbourne City face Sydney FC in the FFA Cup final on Wednesday night

Melbourne City go in search of their first ever trophy when they take on A-League frontrunners Sydney FC in the FFA Cup final on Wednesday night.

The game will be played at AAMI Park in Melbourne with kick off scheduled for 7.30pm AEDT - Latest Sportsbet odds: City ($2.25), Sydney ($2.90), Draw ($3.50).

Both sides secured their spot in the final with clinical semi-final wins, with Sydney taking down Canberra Olympic 3-0 and City outclassing rivals Melbourne Victory 2-0.

A new winner of the FFA Cup will be crowned in Wednesday’s showpiece between Sydney FC and Melbourne City as the first piece of silverware for the 2016/17 season goes on the line at AAMI Park.

Adelaide United and Melbourne Victory captured the FFA Cup in 2014 and 2015 respectively. Will City ensure the cup remains in Victoria for another year or will Sydney win their first trophy in six years?

We’ve got all the makings of a classic. The country’s two top A-League teams. Bucketloads of local and foreign talent. Individual brilliance. Mesmerising team play. Tactically astute coaches. If these two sides play their best, we could be in for our best FFA Cup final yet.

Sydney come into this final as the form team of the competition, despite drawing their last two games, including a 0-0 stalemate with bottom-placed Adelaide last week. The Sky Blues haven’t conceded a goal during their run to the FFA Cup final, however they’ve only played one fellow A-League team, which resulted in a 2-0 extra-time win over Perth Glory in the Round of 16.

While their attack has been firing brilliantly, it’s been in defence where Sydney have been equally as impressive. Graham Arnold’s side has only leaked three goals (one own goal) throughout the opening eight rounds of the A-League season, and in big matches it’s so often defence that gets you over the line. Sydney’s back four will have to be at their best yet again to contain City’s multiple attacking threats.

It’s been Sydney’s skipper and three imports that have done most of the damage this campaign. Alex Brosque, Bobo, Milos Ninkovic and Filip Holosko have combined for 14 of the club’s 18 goals, while winger David Carney has scored another two of the team’s total. It comes as no secret that City must effectively shut down the aforementioned five-some if they are to emerge victorious.

But City have one huge advantage come Wednesday night. The final’s venue of AAMI Park not only gives City home ground advantage, but it makes star striker Bruno Fornaroli even more dangerous. The Uruguayan has scored 21 goals in just 19 games at City’s home ground and expect him to step up again in one of the biggest games of the season.

Tim Cahill will also be targeting a first trophy since returning to Australia. The Socceroos legend has been quiet for the most part since his stunning strike in the Melbourne Derby, but he will be popping up whenever needed and making those trademark runs into the box in search of an elevated cross. It would be just like Cahill to assert his authority in the final and get his name on the scoresheet.

Prediction:

City are unbeaten against Sydney in their last four meetings, including a 3-0 thumping at AAMI Park in March - although to be fair, that was a vastly less fearsome Sky Blues team. Sydney have been consistently the most impressive team this season, but they’ve not matched their early-season quality in their last two matches. Playing at home with the likes of Fornaroli and Cahill - and even add in tireless wingers Brandan and Bruce Kamou - and I give City the edge in this one.
