Match Preview

City have put together a solid start to the A-League season, drawing against Victory in the opening round before consecutive 2-1 wins over Adelaide and Western United to surge into second spot on the ladder.

However, City are in for an early test of their character, with star striker Jamie Maclaren set to miss around a month of action with a hamstring injury.

Maclaren has scored all of City’s goals this season and will prove very hard to replace, meaning the likes of Lachlan Wales and Craig Noone will have to step up.

Can Wellington take advantage of Maclaren’s absence?

Phoenix have played some good football in all of their games this season, but they’ve come up empty-handed on all occasions, losing their first three games to fall to bottom on the ladder.

Wellington were especially impressive against Sydney a couple of weeks ago, but they couldn’t build on that encouraging performance at home to Perth last week, falling 2-1 after going down by two goals in the first 33 minutes.

Having only opened a season with four straight losses just once, can Wellington avoid another setback against the second-placed City? Normally I wouldn’t give them much chance, but with Maclaren out, City might find goals hard to come by. If Wellington can produced a disciplined performance, they can grab a result in this game.

Match Odds

Melbourne City - $1.53
Wellington Phoenix - $6.50
Draw - $4.00
