Match Preview

After coming up short against Melbourne City last weekend, Western United are in for another Melbourne derby on Saturday night when they square off against Victory at Marvel Stadium.

United kicked off their season in impressive fashion, beating Wellington across the ditch and drawing 1-1 with last season’s minor premiers Perth, but they suffered their first defeat in the A-League last week when they went down 2-1 to City.

Besart Berisha netted an equaliser in the second half and from there it appeared as if the two teams would share the spoils, but Jamie Maclaren popped up to score his double and hand City the win in the 85th minute.

Despite the loss, United are looking like strong contenders in their debut season, with the team equipped with a lethal front three in Berisha, Scott McDonald and Alessandro Diamanti, who has played more passes into the box than any other player in the competition.

Meanwhile, Victory will be aiming to build on their opening win of the season last week after they edged Brisbane 1-0 at Suncorp.

Andrew Nabbout gave Victory the lead in the first half and they were able to hold on for the three points despite a late onslaught from Brisbane. Victory are still well off their best, but they have the chance to generate some momentum in this clash with United.

It’s another tough game to predict. United have arguably played the better football across the first three rounds, but surely it’s only a matter of time before Victory find their feet - and what better time than a first derby showdown against a new rival?

Match Odds

Melbourne Victory - $2.34
Western United - $3.00
Draw - $3.20
