Newcastle Jets face Persija Jakarta on Tuesday night

Newcastle Jets begin their challenging road to the AFC Champions League group stages when they play host to Indonesian club Persija Jakarta on Tuesday night at Hunter Stadium.

Newcastle vs Jakarta kicks off at 7.00pm local time at Hunter Stadium. The game will be broadcast live on Fox Sports in Australia.

Match Preview

Back playing AFC Champions League football for the first time in a decade, can the Jets navigate their first obstacle in Indonesian powerhouses Persija Jakarta and set up a tantalising final qualifying showdown with reigning champions Kashima Antlers?

Newcastle were unlucky to miss out on direct qualification into the group stages last season - they finished second in the regular season and were edged out 1-0 in the Grand Final by Melbourne Victory due to a controversial VAR blunder, while if Sydney FC had held on to their lead in the semi-finals and not allowed Victory a houdini-like escape, Ernie Merrick’s men would have secured their spot.

Alas, these are the cards that Newcastle have been dealt, and they can’t afford to look any further ahead than their opponents on Tuesday night.

Persija Jakarta, the reigning Indonesian champions, are a fast and slick side and arrive in Newcastle on a high following a brilliant 3-1 away win to Singaporean club Home United last week.

Jakarta’s star player comes in the form of Croatian striker Marko Simic, who represented his country at U19, U20 and U21 level and has scored 18 goals in 30 appearances for the club. Jakarta are also equipped with a couple of talented Brazilians in midfielder Bruno Matos and defender Negate.

Meanwhile, the Jets have found it difficult to back up their sensational play from last season, currently languishing in seventh on the A-League ladder, eight points off a finals spot.

Newcastle have threatened all season and actually lead the competition for shots on goal, but they’ve lacked finishing ability and have been made to pay the price.

Coming into this clash on the back of a 1-1 draw with Wellington last Thursday, the Jets are the big favourites at home, but they can’t afford to underestimate Jakarta, who will be dangerous on the counter with their pace on the flanks.
