Australia's Socceroos begin their preparations for the 2018 World Cup Finals with a friendly against Norway at Ullevaal Stadion, Oslo on Friday (Saturday morning AEST).

Norway v Australia kicks off at 04.00am AEST on Saturday morning (6.00pm local on Friday night).

Match Preview

It is a new era for the Socceroos as coach Bert van Marwijk takes charge of Australia for the first time when they take on Norway in a friendly in Oslo to begin three months of preparations for the 2018 World Cup Finals.

Van Marwijk was the man Football Australia opted for to replace Ange Postecoglou after he quit following the Socceroos' two-leg intercontinental play-off victory over Honduras, which booked their spot at the finals in Russia.

Having been drawn in Group C with France, Denmark and Peru, Van Marwijk gets the chance to see how his side performs against both European and South American opposition this week as they face Norway before clashing with Colombia four days later.

It will be only the third time that Australia and Norway have met but the Socceroos have never lost to the Scandinavians following a 1-0 win in 1997 and a 2-2 draw seven years later in 2004.

The Socceroos scrambled across the line to make the finals, edging past Syria in the Asian qualifying play-off before a hard-fought success over Honduras and Van Marwijk will be looking to inject a spark back into the men in green and gold.

Norway will provide a test despite failing to reach the World Cup themselves, with Lars Lagerback's side unbeaten at home throughout 2017 courtesy of draws with Czech Republic and Sweden and wins over Azerbaijain and Northern Ireland.

It is in front of goal that Norway must do better, however, with just five goals scored in eight games during the last calendar year excluding the 8-0 win over minnows San Marino.

Will the Socceroos, who failed to score in just three of their 13 games in 2017, be able to test what is a largely stubborn Norway defence? It should be a tight game and one where it pays to sit on the fence with a 1-1 draw screaming out as value.
