Match Preview

Outright competition leaders and one of the form teams of the new A-League season, can Perth extend their unbeaten streak to five matches when they square off against the bottom-placed Mariners on Sunday night?

Perth have been on fire to start the season, winning three and drawing one in their opening four matches, including a last-start 2-0 away win over FFA Cup champions Adelaide United before the international break.

Tony Popovic couldn’t have asked for a better start as Glory manager, and he receives another boost for this clash as captain and star striker Diego Castro returns from a hamstring injury, adding yet another threat to Perth’s attacking third.

Looking to keep their winning momentum going, Perth will start as strong favourites against a Central Coast team that has slumped back into old habits.

The Mariners showcased some encouraging form to start the season with consecutive draws against Brisbane Roar and Melbourne City, but they have been poor in their last two outings, losing 3-0 to Adelaide and 4-1 to Melbourne Victory.

Mike Mulvey probably would have welcomed the international break last week as it gave his team a chance to regroup after consecutive defeats, but life doesn’t get any easier as his side travels across the country to face the competition leaders.

Eight of the last nine meetings between these sides have been won by the home side, and given Perth’s current form, expect that trend to continue. Central Coast have goals in them, and I think they will score, but Perth are even more dangerous, and I expect the Mariners’ weak defence to leak a few come Sunday night.

Match Odds

Perth Glory - $1.40
Central Coast Mariners - $7.00
Draw - $4.50
