Sydney FC take on Shanghai Shenhua on Wednesday night

Runaway A-League leaders Sydney FC look to bounce back from a disappointing opening AFC Champions League defeat last week when they travel to China to face Shanghai Shenhua on Wednesday night.

Shanghai vs Sydney kicks off at 11.00pm AEDT (8.00pm local time) at Hongkou Football Stadium. The game will be broadcast live on Fox Sports in Australia.

Preview and Tips

After a tough 2-0 loss to Suwon Bluewings in their opening AFC Champions League Group H fixture last week, reigning A-League premiers Sydney FC will be determined to claim all three points as they head to China to face Shanghai Shenhua on Wednesday night.

Completely dominant in the A-League during the last two seasons, Sydney found the going much more challenging in the AFC Champions League, with the Sky Blues lacking their usual cutting edge as they were comfortably dispatched by their Korean opponents, who were still in their pre-season.

Sydney enjoyed a week off in the A-League on the weekend, meaning they could not have asked for better preparation for the long away trip to Shanghai.

Sydney’s star players, especially Adrian Mierzejewski, were kept very quiet against Suwon, with coach Graham Arnold surely wanting more from his big guns this time around.

Picking up zero points from a possible six is certainly not an ideal start to a Champions League campaign, but Sydney do have a good record against Shanghai Shenhua, going unbeaten against the Chinese side in all four of their previous meetings, including away wins in the Champions League in 2007 and 2011.

However, both sides are obviously equipped with entirely different sides at the moment, with Shanghai led by former Inter Milan and Newcastle forward Obafemi Martins and Columbian international Giovanni Moreno, who also serves as the club’s captain.

Shanghai will also be keen for all three points after drawing 1-1 with Kashima Antlers in their first Group H clash last week. Moreno scored in the third minute to give Shanghai the early lead before Kashima drew level in the second half.

Given how dominant Sydney have been in the A-League, I want to back them home in this game. Shanghai have some star quality, but the majority of their side are local Chinese players. With two previous away wins against Shanghai and needing all three points to get their campaign back on track, I think the Sky Blues can return to the winners circle.

Stats

  • Sydney have won both matches played against Shanghai Shenhua away from home
  • Sydney lost their first game the last time they played Champions League and ended up winning the group
  • Shanghai are playing their first AFC Champions League group stage since 2011 (lost to Sydney that year)
