Prediction

Preview and Tips

Melbourne Victory face a daunting task to snap a 16-game winless run on the road in the AFC Champions League against a star-studded Shanghai SIPG outfit.

In 16 previous Champions League matches away from home, Victory have drawn six and lost 10 - numbers that don’t bode well for Kevin Muscat’s side heading into this showdown.

Victory enjoyed the week off from the A-League last weekend, which means they should be fresh and well-rested, but they will need to improve significantly from their domestic form, with the club sitting in fifth spot on the ladder, equal on points with the sixth-placed Wanderers.

However, Victory did produce a promising display in their first Group F outing in the Champions League last week, coming from behind three times in a 3-3 draw with Ulsan Hyundai at AAMI Park. Leroy George was once again the stand-out player for Victory, with the winger scoring two goals and setting up Rhys Williams for the third and final equaliser.

Shanghai meanwhile opened their campaign by claiming all three points in a 1-0 victory over Kawasaki Frontale.

Blessed with immense talent in the final third with Brazilian attacking trio Oscar, Hulk and Elkeson, it’s safe to say keeping Shanghai at bay on their own turf will be a monumental challenge for a Victory team that has only kept three clean sheets in 20 A-League games this season.

Oscar and Hulk the big-money players at Shanghai, with the former winning two EPL titles with Chelsea and the latter, who signed from Zenit St. Petersburg, representing Brazil on 47 occasions. Elkeson played Victory when the two sides met in the Champions League in 2016 (Victory lost 3-1 in Shanghai) and scored the Chinese club’s winner in their first Group F clash last week.

Stats

  • Shanghai won their first Group F game 1-0, while Victory drew 3-3
  • The two teams split home wins in their 2016 Champions League campaign
  • Victory have kept just three clean sheets all A-League season
