Prediction

Match Preview

The Socceroos begin their bid to qualify for a fifth consecutive World Cup when they square off against Kuwait, who are ranked No. 156 in the world.

After a disappointing World Cup in Russia last year, the Socceroos look to bounce back with a statement performance to launch their 2022 qualifying campaign.

Attack and scoring goals has been a constant issue for the Socceroos, especially with Tim Cahill hanging up the boots, and options in the final third appear to be an issue once again.

Injuries haven’t helped in that regard, with Tom Rogic, Daniel Arzani and Martin Boyle all sidelined, or in Arzani’s case, still trying to work his way back to first-team football.

Adam Taggart will surely be the main man up front after his strong recent performances in South Korea, while Matt Leckie and Awer Mabil will likely support him on the flanks.

Australia have been drawn into Group B alongside Nepal, Chinese Taipei, Jordan and Wednesday morning’s opponents Kuwait.

Currently ranked No. 156 in the world, Kuwait shouldn’t be challenging for first spot in the group like the Socceroos and Jordan, but they certainly won’t be pushovers, especially at home, where it’s expected to be 40C on game day.

And with a recent win over Saudi Arabia under their belt, Kuwait will fancy their chances of troubling the Socceroos on their own turf.

Kuwait also own two wins over Australian from their last five meetings, winning Asian Cup fixtures in 2006 and 2009, while the two teams also drew 2-2 in 2010.

The Socceroos have won their last two clashes by 4-1 and 4-0 scorelines in 2015 and 2018, but I don’t think this will be a blowout. Australia should absolutely win, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it was a narrow triumph.
