Match Preview

Less than a week removed from a lacklustre 1-0 defeat to Jordan in their first outing in Group B, the Socceroos are now under immense pressure to emerge from the group as they prepare to take on Palestine on Friday.

In what has unfortunately become a trend over the last couple of years, Australia offered absolutely nothing going forward and struggled to create any meaningful chances in the attacking third. Jamie Maclaren was barely sighted as he continues to try and prove he’s the man for the No. 9 jersey, while Robbie Kruse was once again disappointing.

If Andrew Nabbout is fit, the former Newcastle Jets winger will be line to replace Kruse in the front three, while Tom Rogic is expected to be fit despite battling a hand injury. Josh Risdon however is set to be ruled out with injury, meaning Graham Arnold has a decision to make at right back.

But, the problem remains up front, and with Daniel Arzani, Matt Leckie, Aaron Mooy and Martin Boyle all injured, Arnold simply doesn’t have many troops to call upon.

Meanwhile, Palestine will be buoyed after securing their first ever Asian Cup point in their Group B opener, restricting Syria to a 0-0 stalemate despite having a man sent off.

Nevertheless, Palestine have got to be considered one of the weaker teams in Asia, and despite their brave display against Syria, surely facing the Socceroos will prove a bridge too far.

But the onus will be on Australia to find some spark in attack, otherwise they will be going home early regardless of the result against Palestine. You’d think that the Socceroos would be better for the run after the Jordan game, but I’m not too confident. They should be too good for Palestine, but they will need to show a lot more if they are too cause any meaningful impact for the remainder of the tournament.

Match Odds

Australia - $1.30
Palestine - $11
