Match Preview

Old foes England and Sweden clash in the World Cup quarter-finals when they go head-to-head in Samara for a place in the last four - and it could be another tense afternoon for both sets of fans.

Sweden came through their Round of 16 game with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Switzerland, while England needed penalties and the heroics of goalkeeper Jordan Pickford to see off Colombia.

It sets up a semi-final showdown between the European neighbours, who have met twice before at World Cup finals with both games ending in a share of the points in group stage games.

England will start as favourites to make their first semi-final since 1990, while for Sweden it is 24 years since they reached the last four in 1994. Who will end that wait?

Sweden have been quietly impressive at this World Cup, recording three wins without conceding against South Korea, Mexico and Switzerland. Germany, meanwhile, needed an injury-time winner to see off the stubborn Swedes 2-1.

England qualified with wins over Tunisia and Panama before losing to Belgium 1-0 in the game neither side really wanted to win. They then had one foot in the quarter-finals only to conceded a Colombian equaliser in injury time and need penalties to complete the job.

Gareth Southgate's England will need to be smarted to break down this resolute Sweden backline marshalled so impressively by captain Andreas Granqvist, and it might be another draw between these foes and extra-time and even penalities to decide it.
