Wellington Phoenix and Perth Glory are aiming for their first win of the A-League season when they face off in the distance derby in A-League Round 3 action on Sunday.

Prediction

Match Preview

Wellington and Perth will be determined to kick-start their 2019/20 A-League season when they square off in the first distance derby of the campaign on Sunday.

Phoenix have created more chances than any other side in the competition over the first two rounds (62), but they have nothing to show for it, losing 1-0 to Western United at home before a spirited 2-1 defeat away to reigning premiers Sydney FC last week.

Despite two defeats, it’s been a promising start to the season for a club many are backing to pick up the wooden spoon - and Wellington should receive a huge boost for this clash, with former Celtic striker Gary Hooper set to make his A-League debut after inking a deal with the Kiwi club last week.

It’s a big game for Phoenix, who sit bottom of the ladder after two rounds - they don’t want to be playing catch-up this early in the season.

Meanwhile, Perth will also be targeting a first win of the season, but they are also unbeaten after consecutive 1-1 draws with Brisbane and United.

Glory were unlucky to share the spoils against the Roar in the opening round after conceding a 95th minute equaliser, while it was their turn to come back in Round 2, with Tony Popovic’s son Kristian handing Perth a 1-1 draw against United.

Wellington are unbeaten in their last four A-League games against Perth at home, and if they can play like they did against Sydney, they are a good chance of extending that run. At the same time, it’s also hard to see Perth losing this one. Another draw might be on the cards across the ditch.

Match Odds

Perth Glory - $2.20
Wellington Phoenix - $3.40
Draw - $3.40

Stats

  • Phoenix unbeaten in last four home games against Glory
  • Perth haven’t drawn three A-League games in a row since 2015
  • Glory have won their last two meetings (at nib Stadium) by a combined 8-0 scoreline
