Wanderers face Mariners on Friday

Wanderers vs Mariners kicks off at 7.50pm AEDT at Spotless Stadium. The game will be broadcast live on Fox Sports in Australia.

Prediction

Match Preview

These two sides have played 12 games combined this season, but the only three points collected by either side was when the Wanderers defeated Wellington 3-0 back in Round 3 - who steps up and picks up a crucial win on Friday night?

Western Sydney looked as if they might be turning a corner after that Round 3 triumph over the Phoenix, drawing with Brisbane 2-2 in their next outing. However, they have been sent crashing back down to earth after a 2-0 home loss to Newcastle was followed by a 4-0 thumping away to reigning premiers Victory last week.

Leaking six goals and failing to score in their last two games, Wanderers coach Markus Babbel said it was “men against boys” in the Victory defeat, while also declaring his side played with too much fear.

Western Sydney weren’t really a factor in the A-League last season, and if they don’t start stringing some wins together soon, they might be fading into obscurity yet again.

Meanwhile, the Mariners are in an even worse predicament, arriving at this showdown in the all-too familiar position of rock bottom.

Anchored to the foot of the ladder with just two points from the first six rounds, Central Coast have failed to build on a promising start to the season - although there are signs that improvement might be around the corner.

Seconds away from claiming a point against competition leaders Perth Glory away from home, Central Coast followed that effort up with a spirited 2-1 defeat to Sydney FC last week.

However, defence remains an issue for the club, with the Mariners failing to keep a clean sheet in their last 12 A-League matches. With the Wanderers failing to score in their last two games, something has got to give on Friday night. Considering it’s been over a year since Central Coast have won a game away from home, I’m going to lean with Western Sydney to get the job done in a scrappy game.

Match Odds

Western Sydney Wanderers - $1.65
Central Coast Mariners - $5.00
Draw - $4.15
