Prediction

Preview and Tips

Newcastle have an opportunity to increase their lead in second spot over Melbourne City to seven points and reduce Sydney FC’s lead to nine when they take on Western Sydney on Friday night.

It’s been a dream season for the Jets, who after finishing with the wooden spoon in two of the last three seasons and failing to make the finals since 2009, have won 11 games and lost just four in surging into second spot, effectively already sealing finals football in mid-February.

Now touted as a genuine challenger to Sydney FC and their A-League title defence, the Jets are also eyeing off Asian Champions League football for next season.

One team that knows all about the Asian Champions League is the Wanderers, and after a tough start to the season, Josep Gombau’s side seem to be hitting their stride, winning two games on the trot, including a 4-0 hammering of Wellington last week.

Those victories have seen Western Sydney cement their top six status, and if they can topple the Jets on Friday night, they will move past Melbourne Victory into fifth spot. Depending on how Adelaide go, they could also tie the Reds in equal fourth by the end of the round.

It’s a massive game for both sides in their respective seasons, but who will come out on top?

Newcastle were dominant in their last clash just before Christmas, coming away with a brilliant 4-0 win at McDonald Jones Stadium, but the Wanderers are much more confident now and have begun to click under the tutelage of Gombau.

All the ingredients are there for an entertaining contest, but before the Christmas game, the Jets hadn’t beaten the Wanderers in their last seven games. With Western Sydney playing better and at home, I can see a much tighter contest this time around. I’m backing a share of the spoils.

Stats

  • Newcastle won 4-0 in their last meeting on December 22
  • Wanderers were unbeaten in their seven encounters before that
  • The two teams drew 2-2 in their only other previous meeting at Spotless
