Prediction

Match Preview

United have put together a fantastic start to their debut season in the A-League, coming into Round 6 in second spot on the competition ladder on the back of two superb come-from-behind victories.

Indeed, United recovered from a 2-0 deficit inside 10 minutes to beat Melbourne Victory a fortnight ago, before again coming back again from conceding an early goal against the Western Sydney Wanderers, with Andrew Durante and Kwabena Appiah-Kubi’s strikes cancelling out Mitchell Duke’s 5th-minute opener.

While coach Mark Rudan will be delighted with how his team has responded to adversity so far this season, he will be hoping for a much better start against a team who is still searching for their first win of the season on Saturday night.

It’s looking like the same old story for the Jets this season if the first six rounds are any indication, with Ernie Merrick’s team creating a whole host of chances but failing to convert them into goals.

Newcastle produced their best display of the season against Perth last week, but they couldn’t capitalise on their possession and dominance in the final third, conceding a late equaliser to draw 1-1.

That result left the Jets in 10th spot on the table and without a win over the first six rounds - can they get off the mark in Geelong?

It’s unlikely. Newcastle are without a recognised or established striker with Abdiel Arroyo away on International duty for Panama, and with goals hard to come by, it will only make the Jets’ task harder. At home, I expected United to be too strong and post their fourth straight win.

Match Odds

Western United - $2.05
Newcastle Jets - $3.40
Draw - $3.60
