Match Preview

It was a dream start to life in the A-League for Western United last week, but they will find the going much tougher against Perth Glory on Saturday.

United bagged all three points across the ditch last week against Wellington Phoenix, with A-League legend Besart Berisha scoring the only goal of the game in a 1-0 triumph after he slotted home Josh Risdon’s cross from close range.

“It was a very important win. We’re a new club and this team desperately needs a good start to build momentum and togetherness,” Berisha said.

“It’s a new team, we feel we’re a great bunch of boys, very experienced. First tough game far away, tough trip and the way we fight together was exactly what we needed for the start of the season to build momentum and show the fighting spirit.”

With Connor Pain providing his electric pace down the other wing, United showed a lot of promise in their first A-League outing - but they will need to go to another level at home against Perth.

Tony Popovic’s side were excellent last season as they took home the minor premiership, but they fell just short of a Grand Final triumph as they were edged by Sydney FC.

Perth weren’t overly impressive in their first game of the season against Brisbane last week, with the Roar controlling possession 55 per cent to 45, while Roy O’Donovan’s last-minute strike handed the away side a much-deserved point.

However, any team with Bruno Fornaroli and Chris Ikonamidis up front is always going to be dangerous, and you’d expect Glory to be better in Round 2.

This will obviously be the first meeting between these two teams, and it’s a great chance for United to earn a big scalp at home in these early rounds. In saying that, Perth should show signs of improvement from Round 1, so I wouldn’t be surprised if these two sides share the spoils on Saturday.

Match Odds

Perth Glory - $2.45
Western United - $2.75
Draw - $3.50
