Stars vs Thunder Preview & Prediction

The Melbourne Stars started their BBL 11 campaign in the worst fashion possible, losing to the reigning back-to-back champions by 152 runs. They weren’t able to contain the Sixers top order as they conceded Sydney’s highest ever Big Bash score.

Despite being extremely poor with the ball, they were equally as horrid with the bat considering their star power in a large run chase. Although Marcus Stoinis didn’t play, only two Stars players scored double digits.

However, they do have a very good recent history against the Thunder, winning five of the last six meetings.

Meanwhile, it was the complete opposite start to the season for Sydney, toppling over the Brisbane Heat by seven wickets. They also obtained the extra Bash Boost point, which could come in handy at the business end of the season.

The Thunder won’t find it as easy against the Stars as their cross-town rivals, but they do have the capability to hurt them despite their recent record. Alex Ross proved his lethality with the bat in a strong 109 run partnership with Sam Billings.

Considering the MCG pitch is typically a flat pitch that suits the batsmen, it’s likely that you could see a high-scoring affair and despite the Stars low score last week, I believe they could bounce back with a win at home on Friday night.

The most obvious choice is to bat first and could sway the result of the match if the Thunder win the toss. When the Stars have batted first against the Thunder, they average almost 30 more runs than when they bat second.
