Safeway Open Tips, Predictions & Preview

Expert tips, predictions and best bets for the 2020 Safeway Open on the PGA Tour.

The PGA Tour continues Thursday, September 10 with the Safeway Open at Silverado Resort and Spa in Napa, California.

Following the Tour Championship, the PGA Tour boasts a lesser quality field for the Safeway Open which takes place September 10-13.

The North Course is a par of 72 and driving accuracy will be the key to success in the Safeway Open which sees Phil Mickelson and Si-Woo Kim as the $21 equal favourites.

At last year’s event, Cameron Champ walked away with the major prize after shooting -17 for the tournament to defeat Adam Hadwin. The 10th most birdies in any event was recorded in the 2019 Safeway Open; 45% of all birdies came on the four Par 5 holes.

Safeway Open Tips and Predictions: Best Bet ?

One of two favourites for the event is Si-Woo Kim and the Korean golfer is playing in fine form having made the last nine cuts. T13 with -7 at the PGA Championship, he then was T3 at the Wyndham. T39 at The Northern Trust is a performance that can be forgiven with Si-Woo Kim playing for a ninth successive week. A break should have him refreshed and his SG: Around the Green could be vital to playing well at this course.

Safeway Open Tips and Predictions: Best Value ?

We have two value plays for the Safeway Open. The first is Doc Redman, who has been inconsistent since the restart; he has finished 21st or better in four of the nine events played, but his worst form has also seen him miss the cut three times. Redman finished third at the Wyndham Championship after shooting -18 for the tournament. He then missed the cut at The Northern Trust with a +4. His game should be suited at the Silverado course; he ranked 30th SG: Off The Tee, 11th in SG: Approach and 11th Greens In Regulation.

Our second value play is Mark Hubbard. He has been flying under the radar, making nine of the 10 cuts. Recent performances include a T12 at the Rocket Mortgage Classic and T15 in the Wyndham Championship. Hubbard will appreciate playing this tournament that has a number of top players missing. He ranks 24th in Eagle Average, 11th in Total Birdies and 12th in Total Putting; these statistics suggest Hubbard has a solid chance of claiming victory.

Safeway Open Tips and Predictions: Top 20 ?

Kevin Chappell is $91 to win the tournament, but he appeals in the Top 20 market at $7.50. Chappell looks to be getting back to his best after many injury issues. He has played in three events since the restart, missing the cut at the RBC Heritage. He then played steadily with a T54 at the Travelers Championship and T62 at the Rocket Mortgage Classic. Chappell doesn’t stand out when analysis the stats, but he did shoot a 59 at the Greenbrier. He looks like he could break into the Top 20 here and represents value.
