CAULFIELD STAKES HISTORY AND GUIDE
The Caulfield Stakes attracts a high-class field of stayers that use the weight for age feature as a final preparation before competing in the $3 million Cox Plate (2040m) at Moonee Valley two weeks later.
It is held on the same day as the $1 million Caulfield Guineas (1600m), Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) and Group 1 Toorak Handicap (1600m).
In recent years, Northerly (2001), Fields Of Omagh (2006), So You Think (2010), Ocean Park (2012) and Winx (2016) have come through the Caulfield Stakes on their way to Cox Plate success.
Dating back to 1886, Isonomy won the inaugural running of the Caulfield Stakes. It would be renamed the Yalumba Stakes for a number of years between 1997 and 2010 before being called the Caulfield Stakes once again from 2011 onwards.
The race has been run over 1800m and 2000m throughout its history and received Group 1 status in 1979.
Although the Caulfield Stakes into the Cox Plate route is the most common, a number of horses have also won the Caulfield Stakes-Caulfield Cup double.
One of the key lead-up races to the Caulfield Stakes is the Underwood Stakes with six of the past 10 winners coming through that Group 1 feature held at Caulfield two weeks earlier.
Criterion is the most recent winner of the Caulfield Stakes in 2015 after racing in Europe prior to his victory in the event. He ran unplaced in the Group 1 Prince Of Wales’s Stakes (2012) at Royal Ascot and Group 1 Juddmonte International Stakes (2092m) at York.
In 2014, Criterion was narrowly beaten by Fawkner but would get his revenge 12 months later.
Superstars that have won the Caulfield Stakes-Cox Plate double include Tranquil Star (1942), Rising Fast (1954), Kingston Town (1981-82), Bonecrusher (1986), Might And Power (1998), Northerly (2001), So You Think (2010), Ocean Park (2012) and Winx (2016).
