Curtis Blaydes vs Derrick Lewis

The #2 ranked Heavyweight contender Curtis Blaydes meets the #4 ranked Derrick Lewis in a vital Heavyweight bout.

Nicknamed Razor, Curtis Blaydes was closing in on a shot at the belt in 2018 after defeating heavyweight legend Alistair Overeem in three rounds. Unfortunately, Blaydes bumped into the #1 contender Francis Ngannou in November 2018 where he was knocked out in 45 seconds. Following that loss, Blaydes would have a unanimous decision win over Justin Willis and a second-round TKO victory over Shamil Abdurakhimov.

Blaydes then knocked out former UFC Heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos back in January. He then cemented himself as a top contender by defeating Alexander Volkov over five rounds in June.

On the other side of the Octagon is a man that has fought for the title in the past. Lewis had a three-fight win streak, including wins over Ngannou and Volkov, which earned him a shot at champion Daniel Cormier. The fight would only last just over seven minutes before DC applied a rear-naked choke to retain his title.

‘The Black Beast’ would lose again as dos Santos would get the TKO win in the second round. Lewis would bounce back from consecutive losses by winning his last three fights. Decision wins over Blagoy Ivanov and Ilir Latifi would give him the confidence for his most recent fight, where he would stop ‘The Boa Constrictor’ Aleksei Oleinik early in the second round.

This fight looks intriguing considering Lewis has one-punch knockout power that could stop Blaydes in his tracks. He has been working on two flaws in his game, that being takedown defense and cardio. But can he stop the takedown against Blaydes who averages 6.63 takedowns per 15 minutes.

It is hard to go past Blaydes in this fight because his stand-up skills can trouble Lewis, and he clearly has a massive edge in the grappling department. The key here is for Blaydes to quickly close the distance, look to get Lewis to the mat and look for his brutal ground and pound game to finish the fight.
