Paul Felder vs Rafael dos Anjos

A last-minute call up for Paul Felder who was set to commentate this fight card and now he finds himself in the main event against former UFC Lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos.

It is a return to 155lbs for dos Anjos after a stint at Welterweight. Originally scheduled to fight Islam Makhachev, Michael Chandler was asked to compete but turned down the opportunity to make his UFC debut, which left Felder to step up on very short notice.

With the microphone off and gloves on, Felder enters the Octagon for the second time this year. Back in February, he suffered a split decision loss against Dan Hooker in New Zealand. He is currently the #7 ranked Lightweight in the division and a win over dos Anjos could land him in the top five.

RDA’s recent record doesn’t read well with four losses from his last five fights. Looking into that 1-4 run and you will see he was beaten by current champion Kamaru Usman, former title contender Colby Covington and Leon Edwards who has won his last eight fights. dos Anjos was able to defeat former champion Robbie Lawler during his 170lbs tenure and submitted Kevin Lee.

It is a good move back to 155lbs for dos Anjos. Back at UFC 185, RDA won the UFC Lightweight Championship via unanimous decision over Anthony Pettis. He then successfully defended the belt against Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone with a 66-second TKO. He would lose the title to Eddie Alvarez before a gruelling five rounds against Tony Ferguson which he also lost.

There should be a distinct grappling advantage for dos Anjos over Felder with the Brazilian-American potentially looking to smother ‘The Irish Dragon’ by having control time on the mat. The gas tank for Felder has to be a concern after taking this fight at the last minute.

Under normal circumstances, RDA by decision would be the preferred option considering Felder has only been stopped once in his career – that was by doctor stoppage against Francisco Trinaldo in 2016. Considering the short notice, Felder is likely to gas during the fight and dos Anjos can look to submit him for the first time in his career. RDA has 10 submission victories to his name and likes to work the arm for a tap out win.
