Alistair Overeem vs Alexander Volkov

When Alistair Overeem makes the walk to the Octagon on Sunday, he will be doing so for his 67th professional MMA fight. The one thing that has alluded him over his career is UFC gold. He has won titles around the world, but never climbed to the top of the UFC’s Heavyweight division.

He was given the opportunity at UFC 203 back in 2016 when challenging Stipe Miocic for the belt. Overeem wouldn’t get through a round as Miocic knocked him out.

At the age of 40, Overeem probably has his last chance to make a run at the belt and he has won four of his last five fights. His defeat in that time could have been a win too if it weren’t for Jairzinho Rozenstruik knocking out Overeem in the final five seconds of their fight. Overeem bounced back quickly with wins over Walt Harris and Augusto Sakai.

Standing in Overeem’s way for a final quest at UFC gold is Alexander Volkov. The 32-year-old Russian started his UFC career with a big as he put together four-straight wins, including knockout victories over Stefan Struve and former champion Fabricio Werdum. His form has been mixed since then with two wins and two losses, although his losses have come against Derrick Lewis and Curtis Blaydes.

In his latest fight, Volkov stopped Walt Harris early into the second round at UFC 254 in October.

Who wins this main event? Overeem has suffered 14 knockout losses from his 18 defeats in his career which shows his chin can be a weakness, but as he has gotten older, Overeem has adopted a more patient and tactical approach that should help him avoid Volkov’s finishing power (21 knockout wins). If Overeem fights smart, his veteran prowess can see him win a third-straight fight and put himself one step closer to a title shot.
