Alexander Volanovski KO/TKO
They don’t call him ‘The Great’ for nothing.
Alexander Volkanovski’s record is truly phenomenal when you take a look closely.
He has one loss in 24 professional MMA fights including his last 20 in a row and 10 inside the UFC.
He beat former champion Chad Mendes and then arguably the best two fighters the Featherweight division has ever seen in Jose Aldo and Max Holloway (twice).
Then came his incredible fight against Brian Ortega in September last year where his grit and determination was on show for all to see.
These attributes are possibly his greatest strengths and that is saying something considering his sensational all round skillset.
People may look back at his fight with Ortega and think he almost lost, when in reality, despite a couple of tough situations on the canvas, he dominated the score card 49-46, 50-45, 50-44.
After Max Holloway pulled out of the fight there really was no obvious choice for the champ having cleared out his division so The Korean Zombie landed a title shot.
Was it deserving?
He is an incredible mixed martial artist who has forged a long and successful career and comes into this fight having won three of his last four.
This challenge should not be taken lightly but Volk is in his prime and simply too much.
Three of The Korean Zombie’s last four losses have been by KO/TKO and I think Volk can end his string of decision wins with a KO or TKO ground and pound.
Petr Yan KO/TKO
Aljamain Sterling was shunned by a large portion of the MMA fanbase after being illegally knee’d in the head by Petr Yan during their first encounter.
Many claimed he was faking a concussion just to be crowned champion and this is an extremely unfair assessment of how things played out back in March 2021.
It was a vicious knee right to his temple and although he wasn’t knocked out clean, there was enough force to stop the fight in my opinion.
So here they are again.
That was just the second loss that Petr Yan has suffered during his 18 fight professional career and he won the interim Bantamweight title in Sterling’s absence against Cory Sandhagen.
That was an extremely close fight, and one that I scored to Sandhagen and of the three short-priced favourites on the card, I think Yan is the most at risk.
What concerns me the most is that Sterling is a very competent wrestler but Yan completed seven takedowns from seven attempts in their first fight and he was clearly winning the fight when the DQ occurred.
And it is clear that Yan has the advantage on the feet.
I’m confident that Petr Yan is the best Bantamweight in the UFC and he will find a way to get a finished with five rounds to do so.
Khamzat Chimaev KO/TKO or Submission
One of my favourite parts of this sport is latching onto an exciting prospect early on in their UFC career and watching them tear through their division.
Not only from a fan point of view but also from a betting proposition, there is plenty of money to be made.
There is no bigger hype train in the UFC right now than Khamzat Chimaev and we may not have seen this much excitement around one fighter since a young, Irishman started ripping his way through the Featherweight division almost a decade ago.
He is 24-0 in pro wrestling, was 3-0 as an amateur in MMA and is now 10-0 as a pro including four wins in the UFC promotion.
His last three wins have been finished inside the first round and we haven’t even seen this amazing cardio that everyone keeps telling us he has.
Credit to Gilbert Burns for taking this fight because no one else wanted to.
His only loss in his last eight fights when he took on the Welterweight champion Kamaru Usman back in February last year.
Burns is a third degree black belt in BJJ but he won’t get an opportunity to use it against Chimaev who is being touted as possibly the best wrestler that the UFC has ever seen.
Gilbert Burns is also a former Lightweight whereas Chimaev is a natural Middleweight and could legit challenge the best Light Heavyweight’s in the sport in my opinion.
I am of the opinion that Khamzat Chimaev will be the Welterweight champion by the end of the year before going up and challenging for Israel Adesanya’s title.
UFC 273 Tips
Jackonsville, Florida will play host to UFC 273 this Sunday afternoon as Aussie UFC Featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski attempts to defend his strap for a third time.
Max Holloway has gone into hiding (well, he’s injured), so the Aussie champ will line up and knock down whoever is next in front of him.
Unfortunately The Korean Zombie is that man.
Aljamain Sterling ‘defends’ his belt for the first time in a rematch with Petr Yan.
Of course, the first fight ended in controversial circumstances so there is plenty of feeling in that one.
The undefeated Khamzat Chimaev is also on the card. Seemingly the only guy that wanted the fight was Gilbert Burns so he gets his shot to stop the hype train.
