Canterbury Bulldogs vs Brisbane Broncos Preview & Prediction

It’s a big game for both the Bulldogs and Broncos as the two sides square off at Belmore Sports Ground on Saturday afternoon.

A sell-out crowd of 17,000 is expected after club legend Josh Reynolds announced his retirement at the start of the week, with his final game coming in the NSW Cup as the Bulldogs face the Bears earlier in the day.

Bulldogs fans will be hoping to celebrate Reynolds’ career with a win in that game and follow it up with a big performance against the high-flying Broncos.

Canterbury have reason to be cautiously optimistic – they erased a horror 0-66 loss to the Knights by upsetting the Rabbitohs last week, holding on for a 36-32 triumph.

New halfback Toby Sexton had a blinder in his club debut, also allowing Matt Burton to play a more natural game as a running five-eighth.

There’s also a chance star forward Viliame Kikau could return early from a torn pectoral, but he hasn’t been named in the squad at the time of writing.

Meanwhile, the Broncos are in an interesting position as they look to avoid a repeat of last season, when they lost five of their last six matches to finish ninth and miss out on the finals.

The cracks are already starting to appear – the Broncos lost 18-12 to the Titans a few weeks ago before a nervous 24-16 win over the struggling Dolphins.

With Reece Walsh suspended and their forward pack decimated, the Broncos will have to be at their best to come out on top in what will be an emotional day at the Dogs’ spiritual home.

VERDICT

If the Bulldogs can draw on the energy from the sell-out crowd and produce a performance like last week, then they are every chance of the upset here.

However, we’ll be backing Over 44.5 points as our best bet. Sexton’s arrival all of a sudden means the Dogs have the ability to score points, but their defence is still very suspect. Canterbury have seen 58+ points in their last three games and 46+ in their last five. Another high-scoring affair is on the cards here (Best Over 44.5 points odds $1.90 with bet365.)
