St George Illawarra Dragons vs Canberra Raiders Preview & Prediction

The Raiders go in search of a third straight win when they meet the lowly Dragons on Friday night at WIN Stadium.

After a rough start to the season, the Raiders have been on fire and are just two points off an equal-share of the competition lead.

With games against sides outside the top eight in three of the next four rounds, the Raiders have an excellent chance to lock down a top four spot.

Canberra haven’t been blowing teams off the park this season (all 10 of their wins have seen a 1-12 margin), but they love the grind and Ricky Stuart will be proud of the fashion his team digs out victories.

However, now they have a great chance to make a statement against a team that has well and truly shut up shop for 2023.

The Dragons have been a club in shambles for a while now and nothings changed in 2023. The only reason the Dragons aren’t bottom of the ladder is due to the Cowboys’ 74-0 win over the Tigers last week.

Since the bye in Round 16, the Dragons have conceded 100 points, losing 48-18 to the Warriors and 52-16 to the Sharks.

St George Illawarra have lost their last nine games without Ben Hunt, so doesn’t look like they are any chance with their star man out on Queensland Origin duty.

VERDICT

I mentioned the Raiders don’t usually post big wins, but that should change here. The Dragons are a mess and without Hunt, they will be even worse here.

Canberra have won six of the last eight meetings between the teams and nine of their last 11 games this season. Backing them to cover a -11.5 line here (Best Raiders -11.5 line odds $1.87 with bet365.)
