Sharks vs Panthers Preview and Prediction

After suffering their first defeat of the season last week, the Panthers will be determined to bounce back when they face a resurgent Sharks side on Friday night.

Penrith saw their 12-match winning streak snapped at the hands of the Tigers, but that defeat was largely due to the team missing all of their Origin stars.

Ivan Cleary hasn’t named any of Nathan Cleary, Jarome Luai, Brian To’o, Isaah Yeo, Liam Martin and Kurt Capewell, but it wouldn’t be surprising at all to see some, if not all named on Friday night provided they all come through Origin unscathed.

With Melbourne breathing down their neck at the top of the ladder, the Panthers certainly won’t want to slump to back-to-back defeats.

Meanwhile, the Sharks come into this showdown on a two-match winning streak having accounted for the Dragons and Titans.

Cronulla edged the Dragons by one points before storming to a 38-10 victory over the Titans. Fresh off the bye last week and with five players returning from injury or suspension, the Sharks will be confident of giving the Panthers a decent run for their money here.

VERDICT:

Penrith touched up Cronulla 48-0 when these two sides met earlier in the season and whether they do so again depends on if their Origin stars play this match.

Regardless, the Sharks should offer up a better effort considering their form over the last fortnight, but the competition leaders are a big step up in class.

The Panthers have won the last four games between the teams, while the last six have gone over the total points line. We like that trend to continue on Friday night – provided some of Penrith’s Origin players take the field (Panthers 13+ best odds $2.50 with Sportsbet).

Sharks vs Panthers Teams

Andrew Fifita joins the Sharks bench in place of Franklin Pele in their only change to the side that downed the Titans.

Ivan Cleary hasn’t selected Nathan Cleary, Jarome Luai, Isaah Yeo, Brian To’o, Liam Martin or Kurt Capewell in the official team sheet, but that could easily change come kick-off on Friday.
