Dolphins vs Penrith Panthers Preview & Prediction

It’s taken 20 rounds, but the Dolphins will play their first game against reigning premiers when they host the Panthers at Kayo Stadium on Sunday.

The Dolphins started the season on fire, but their form has dropped off dramatically over the last couple of months, coming into this clash with four defeats from their last five games.

However, such is the close nature of the NRL this season, they arrive in Round 20 just two points outside the top eight.

Wayne Bennett’s side got back on track with a 23-21 golden point victory over the Titans last week, but the master coach will need to overturn a 1-6 record vs Ivan Cleary-coached sides if the Dolphins are to conjure the upset of the season.

Meanwhile, the Panthers have navigated the Origin period with aplomb, winning seven of their last eight games and doing most of it without Nathan Cleary.

Penrith produced an outstanding comeback to conquer Melbourne on the road in their last outing and are looking strong to make it three premierships on the trot.

All of the Panthers’ Origin stars have been named to back up, while Jarome Luai will be out to make a statement in his 100th NRL game. Cleary has also been named on an extended bench as he nears a comeback from his hamstring injury.

VERDICT

Dolphins have been terrible over the last couple of months, with their only wins coming against a woeful Dragons side and an understrength Titans outfit last week.

Penrith are getting the job done each week and don’t look like taking their foot off the gas. With Luai fresh and their Origin players getting a bit of rest with a Sunday start, I’m backing the Panthers to cover the line with a comfortable victory (Best Panthers -14.5 line odds $1.91 with bet365.)
