Sea Eagles vs Wests Tigers Preview & Prediction

Manly will be confident of returning to the winners circle when they entertain the Tigers in NRL Round 9 action on Saturday at 4 Pines Park.

After four straight wins against the Bulldogs, Raiders, Knights and Titans, the Sea Eagles continued their reputation of being flat track bullies, suffering defeats to the Sharks and Rabbitohs over the last fortnight.

The Sea Eagles did showcase some spirit in both of those defeats, almost recovering from a 32-0 first half deficit against the Sharks by scoring 22 points in the second half, while they were competitive for the bulk of the game in a 40-22 loss to Souths despite having Karl Lawton sent off with 70 minutes remaining.

Last year, Manly more often than not beat up on teams below them on the ladder only to go down against the elite teams, and so far that trend is continuing in 2022, with the Roosters and Panthers also getting the better of them.

With Tom Trbojevic returning from injury for this clash, the Sea Eagles will be keen to make a statement at home.

Meanwhile, the Tigers saw their two-game winning run broken at the hands of the Dragons last week, going down in a tight 12-6 defeat.

Michael Maguire’s side produced two heroic wins on the bounce by beating the Eels and Rabbitohs by one point to haul the club off the bottom of the ladder, but they were brought crashing back down to earth last week.

To make matters worse, the Tigers lost key players Luciano Leilua and David Nofoaluma to injury. Jackson Hastings will be keen for a big game after his well-documented departure from Manly in 2018 after a spat with Daly Cherry-Evans.

VERDICT:

The Tigers have improved, but with Trbojevic returning and Manly’s good record at home (four wins from their last five at 4 Pines Park) and against the lesser teams, we have to back the hosts.

Manly to win fairly comfortably with a decent amount of points looks the best bet to launch Super Saturday (Best Sea Eagles -8.5 & over 38.5 points odds $1.95 with bet365.)
