Cowboys vs Storm Preview & Prediction

One of the most highly anticipated matches of the season awaits in Townsville on Saturday night as the Cowboys prepare to test themselves against traditional heavyweights the Storm.

North Queensland have surprised everyone in surging into third spot on the ladder following a run of five straight victories. If they hadn’t slipped up against the last-placed Bulldogs back in Round 1, they would be on equal points with the Storm after 10 rounds.

Regardless, the Cowboys have been outstanding in 2022. Tom Dearden and Chad Townsend have been excellent in the halves, Valentine Holmes and Murray Tualagi are tearing it up out wide and the likes of Reuben Cotter, Jeremiah Nanai and Jason Taumalolo are punching holes through the middle.

Todd Payten has done a remarkable job after his team finished 15th last season and lost that aforementioned R1 game against the Bulldogs, with the Cowboys scoring 30+ points in their last four victories.

Meanwhile, the Storm are aiming to bounce back after suffering their heaviest defeat since 2014 during Magic Round, going down 32-6 to the Panthers.

Melbourne were blown off the park by an inspired Panthers side who were reeling after losing their first match of the season the previous week against Parramatta. The Storm will now be searching for a similar response in Townsville and you can bet your bottom dollar Craig Bellamy will get an improved performance from his side.

Jahrome Hughes is back in a massive boost for the Storm at halfback, while Brandon Smith slots into the forwards for the injured Nelson Asofa-Solomona.

VERDICT:

It should be a cracking contest between two top three teams on Saturday night.

The Storm have dominated this H2H in recent times, winning the last 12 meetings – however, since the 2017 Grand Final, the average winning margin has been eight points, signalling a close affair is on the cards here.

North Queensland are certainly a chance if they maintain their current level, but it’s tough to see the Storm losing two games in a row, especially with Hughes back on deck. Backing Melbourne home in a thriller (Best Storm -5.5 line odds $1.82 with bet365.)
