Wests Tigers vs Storm Preview & Prediction

Wests Tigers had one of the hardest assignments in the NRL in this Round 1 clash when they play host to Melbourne Storm at Stadium Australia on Saturday night.

Incredibly, Craig Bellamy has never lost a Round 1 match since taking charge of the Storm all the way back in 2003, winning every single opener he’s coached.

After a disappointing preliminary final elimination at the hands of the Panthers last season, Bellamy will be determined to return to the Grand Final and capture more premiership glory in 2022.

You’d be a brave man betting against Bellamy and his star-studded team, even with the loss of Josh Addo-Carr, Nicho Hynes and Dale Finucane to rival clubs, while Cameron Munster and Harry Grant are out suspended for this Round 1 outing.

Meanwhile, the Tigers have a new leadership featuring five captains as coach Michael Maguire desperately tries to lift his side up the ladder and back to finals football after years in the wilderness.

However, it will be an almighty effort if Maguire can propel the Tigers back to the top eight, with the club’s roster not looking great on paper heading into this season.

Jackson Hastings and Tyrone Peachey are the two main new signings, and while both are solid NRL players, they are unlikely to prove the difference between featuring in September and an early off-season.

VERDICT:

There was a brief period where the Tigers pushed the Storm hard, but Melbourne absolutely obliterated them in 2021, winning 66-16 and 50-22.

Even without Munster and Grant, the Storm should cruise in this one – especially with Bellamy going unbeaten in Round 1 matches. The man simply knows how to get his team up and running immediately.

With the Storm winning by 40 and 28 points in the two meetings last season, we’ll back them to cover the line again here (Best Storm -12.5 line odds $2.00 with Ladbrokes.)
