New Zealand vs Samoa Preview & Prediction

Eden Park is sure to provide an electric atmosphere for both nations as New Zealand and Samoa lock horns in the Pacific Championships on Saturday afternoon.

Samoa are playing their second match of the competition and will be hungry for improvement after being toppled 38-12 by Australia last week in Townsville.

Samoa were thoroughly outclassed and lacked direction in a makeshift halves pairing of Daejarn Asi and Stephen Crichton, who have been retained for this clash.

With a 0-4 record against New Zealand, the Samoans will do well to cause the upset here, but they should be buoyed by the fact they advanced further than the Kiwis at last year’s World Cup.

Meanwhile, New Zealand are playing their first game of the tournament and are fielding a strong side, captained by Panthers premiership winner James Fisher-Harris.

Jahrome Hughes and Dylan Brown are the halves, while there’s plenty of attacking options out wide in the form of Ronaldo Mulitalo, Joseph Manu and Matthew Timoko, who broke tackles for fun during a career-best NRL season with the Raiders.

Big Nelson will be coming off the bench and the forward battle overall between the likes of Fisher-Harris, Joseph Tapine and Moses Leota up against Stefano Utoikamanu and Junior Paulo will be as physical as it gets.

VERDICT:

Have to back the Kiwis. They can match the muscle of the Samoans in the forwards, but they have equal (if not more) firepower out side and by far the more accomplished and experienced halves pairing.

We should see plenty of points and we’re confident New Zealand can cover a -14.5 line against a Samoan side that are desperately missing Jarome Luai to create in the halves (Best New Zealand -14.5 line odds $1.91 with bet365.)
