New Zealand vs Tonga Preview & Prediction

It’s set to be an electric atmosphere on Saturday afternoon at Mt Smart Stadium as New Zealand and Tonga collide in a highly-anticipated Test match.

Mt Smart Stadium will get its first taste of Rugby League in almost three years, with the Warriors last playing a home game before the pandemic on August 30, 2019, while the last Test match played at the venue was five weeks prior, with New Zealand getting the better of Tonga by a 34-14 scoreline.

Tonga bounced back strongly from that defeat later in 2019 to produce one of the greatest upsets in international Rugby League history, shocking Australia 16-12 on the back of some barnstorming performances from forwards Jason Taumalolo and Addin Fonua-Blake.

The pair are back for Tonga in this clash, but they will do well to spearhead another upset here.

New Zealand have put together an outstanding team for this one-off Test, with Storm and Eels stars Jahrome Hughes and Dylan Brown forming the halves combination, with the rest of the star-studded spine consisting of Joey Manu at fullback and Brandon Smith at hooker.

There’s plenty of try-scoring ability out wide in the form of Ronaldo Mulitalo and Jordan Rapana, while Joseph Tapine will be looking to continue his career-best form at lock in a forward pack that also includes James Fisher-Harris, Isaiah Papali’i and the Bromwich brothers.

Tonga also have plenty of pace in their backline, with Tolutau Koula, Christian Tuipulotu and Sione Katoa, while their forwards pack a punch, with the likes of Keaon Koloamatangi and Sitili Tupouniua joining the aforementioned Fonua-Blake and Taumalolo.

However, Tonga’s undoing could be in the halves. Kotoni Staggs and Talatau Amone are both quality individual players, but Staggs is a centre and Amone is still very inexperienced. There’s plenty of flair, but translating that skill into producing points on the line could prove challenging for the Tongan team.

VERDICT:

Tonga are a rising force in the international game, but this New Zealand team looks ridiculously strong – and with the emotion high surrounding their return to Mt Smart Stadium, they will certainly be up for this game.

The Kiwis have all the pace and brute force of the Tongan side, but also the added bonus of one of the best halfbacks in the game in Hughes. That should prove the difference, so we’re backing New Zealand to cover the -10.5 line in a game that should feature plenty of points (Best New Zealand -10.5 line odds $1.91 with bet365.)
